J. L. Matthey Students Learn Medical Skills
On Saturday, February 6, sixteen J. L. Matthey Middle School students attended the Teen Health Camp, sponsored by the UTHSCSA and SAISD at Edison High School. Students addressed teen health issues as well as being exposed to some medical skills needed by physicians. Students attended physician-led workshops on Suturing, Applying Casts, Stress, HIV/AIDS, Nutrition, Physical Fitness, Parenting, Medical Specialties and more. Pictured, 8th grader Robert Rodriguez applies plaster to the cast on Fernando Monsivais, also in the 8th grade. Students who attended the health camp will be invited to apply to a yearlong Teen Medical Academy, also sponsored by the UTHSCSA.

J. L. Matthey Middle School girls Attend UTSA
The group pictured attended the "Expanding Your Horizons Career Conference" at UTSA on Saturday, January 30. The Conference was for girls in grades 6-8 only and was held on the UTSA 1604 campus. The conference featured presentations and hands-on workshops led by women who are employed in scientific and technical fields. The underlying theme is to encourage girls to take as many mathematics and science courses as possible while in school in order to maximize their career options. The girls met mathematicians, engineers, and scientists who live and work in their own community, who serve as role models at the conference, and who may serve as possible mentors in the future. Two parents, Mrs. Suzanne Morales and Mrs. Margaret Perez also attended the event. All who attended enjoyed the workshops and made new friends.

J. L. Matthey Students Excel at the Spurs LOGOS Competition
Giovanna V. and David C. competed in the 4th Annual LOGOS Vocabulary Competition sponsored by IKON and the San Antonio Spurs. They were given a list of several hundred SAT type vocabulary words to define and study over a three week period. At the competition they took a multiple choice 30 minute test on 55 random words. The finalists were comprised from the top 20 scores on this test. Among the top 20 was 8th grade student David C. In the final round of the competition students competed in an oral round, where David placed 7th. It was a great accomplishment for both students and we are proud of them for representing J. L. Matthey.
