J. L. Matthey Middle School girls Attend UTSA

The group pictured attended the "Expanding Your Horizons Career Conference" at UTSA on Saturday, January 30. The Conference was for girls in grades 6-8 only and was held on the UTSA 1604 campus. The conference featured presentations and hands-on workshops led by women who are employed in scientific and technical fields. The underlying theme is to encourage girls to take as many mathematics and science courses as possible while in school in order to maximize their career options. The girls met mathematicians, engineers, and scientists who live and work in their own community, who serve as role models at the conference, and who may serve as possible mentors in the future. Two parents, Mrs. Suzanne Morales and Mrs. Margaret Perez also attended the event. All who attended enjoyed the workshops and made new friends.

There are still slots available in the UTSA program for 7th and 8th graders. If you are interested, see Ms. Cortez, 7th grade counselor or Ms. Langham, 8th grade counselor, for information and applications.

Remembering 911
In remembering and honoring the 2,976 victims and lives lost on September 11, 2001 Ms. Salinas's J. L. Matthey 7th grade ELA students wrote letters to NYPD Precinct 112 honoring New York's Finest for their bravery and thanking them for all that they do to make New York safe. Rachid Elkadi, a plainclothes cop assigned to Brooklyn North Narcotics from Precinct 112, was very touched by the letters and wanted to thank the students in person. Officer Elkadi visited each class and gave each student an official NYPD patch.

J. L. Matthey Students Excel at the Spurs LOGOS Competition

Giovanna V. and David C. competed in the 4th Annual LOGOS Vocabulary Competition sponsored by IKON and the San Antonio Spurs. They were given a list of several hundred SAT type vocabulary words to define and study over a three week period. At the competition they took a multiple choice 30 minute test on 55 random words. The finalists were comprised from the top 20 scores on this test. Among the top 20 was 8th grade student David C. In the final round of the competition students competed in an oral round, where David placed 7th. It was a great accomplishment for both students and we are proud of them for representing J. L. Matthey.
